Candles & Massage Oil
Massage candles, oils and the things that make an evening in feel like an occasion. A good massage oil lets hands move slowly and easily, and a massage candle melts into a warm oil you can pour straight onto skin. It is an easy place to start if you want to slow things down with a partner.

A massage candle is made from skin safe waxes and oils that melt at a low temperature. Light it, let a pool of wax form, then blow it out and wait a minute before pouring a little onto your hand to check the warmth. Never pour straight from a lit candle onto skin, and never leave one burning unattended.
Massage oils
Massage oils give a long, smooth glide and soak slowly into the skin. Choose an unscented oil if either of you has sensitive skin, and patch test anything new on the inside of your arm first. Oil breaks down latex, so it should not be used with condoms or latex toys, and it is not a substitute for lube. For that, see our guide to which lube to use.
Setting the scene
A massage does not need a plan. Warm the room, put a towel down to protect the sheets, and take it slowly. If you would like to suggest something new to a partner, a massage is a gentle way in, and our piece on bringing it up with a partner has some ideas.
Candles and oils also make easy gifts. See buying for somebody else for more suggestions.
Is a massage candle safe to pour on skin?
Yes, once it has been blown out and has cooled for a minute. Test the temperature on your hand first and never pour from a lit candle.
Can I use massage oil as lube?
It is better not to. Oil breaks down latex condoms and some toys. Use a lube made for the purpose.
Will massage oil stain the sheets?
It can. Put a towel down first, and wash any oil out of fabric as soon as you can.
