Water based, silicone based, and which one goes with what. Get this wrong and you can ruin a silicone toy on the first use, so every listing says what it is safe with.
Water based, silicone based and oil based lubricants, with a clear note on every listing about what each one is safe with. The right lube makes sex and toys more comfortable, and the wrong one can damage a silicone toy or a condom, so it is worth two minutes to choose well. Not sure where to start? Browse everythingThe three kinds of lube
Water based lube is safe with every toy, every condom and every body. It washes off easily and does not stain. It can dry out with long use, but a little water or a little more lube brings it back.
Silicone based lube lasts much longer, stays slippery in the shower or bath and needs less reapplying. It is safe with latex condoms, but it can damage silicone toys, so keep it for glass, steel and hands.
Oil based lube and natural oils feel rich and are good for massage, but they break down latex condoms and some toy materials. Use them only where neither is involved.
How much to use
More than you think, and more again for anal play, where the body makes no lubricant of its own. Our guide to which lube to use and how much goes into more detail, including flavoured and warming lubes.
Sensitive skin
If you are prone to irritation or thrush, look for a lube that is free from glycerine and parabens and has a pH close to the body's own. Patch test anything new first. Our guide to what body safe means explains what to look for in the ingredients.
Which lube is safe with condoms?
Water based and silicone based lubes are both safe with latex condoms. Oil based lubes are not.
Can I use silicone lube with a silicone toy?
It is best not to, because it can make the surface of the toy tacky. Use water based lube with silicone toys.
What lube is best for sensitive skin?
A water based lube free from glycerine and parabens, with a pH close to the body's own. Patch test it first.
Why does my lube go sticky?
Water based lube dries as the water evaporates. Add a few drops of water or a little more lube.
